MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week's movie topic is all about Subtitles..
Carleen @ Life, Liberty & Good Coffee recently suggested the topic of subtitles. So this weeks theme is what foreign films have you enjoyed? I personally do not have a problem with subtitles as I used to watch a lot of original Japanese Animation (dont get to see so much any more, not enough time). It is a real skill though to read quickly then watch the scene unfold. These days I dont watch a lot of subtitled movies, in fact I think the last one (new) I saw was Crouching Tiger.Armour of God - Hong Kong/Chinese movie about an Indiana Jones style character. Action, Comedy and Awesome stunts. This is a Jacki Chan movie and personally I prefer his non English stuff. The action sequences are really why you watch his non English films. No insurance companies saying "dont do it" here. In fact while filming Armour of God Jacki almost died and had to have a hole drilled into his head (which is a permanent hole filled with a plastic plug). The scene is played at the end of the movie.
Das Boot - German movie about a U-Boat in WWII. This movie is about the life of a submariner. Even though it is told from the German perspective there is no right or wrong, its just survival and do your job. This was also one of Wolfgang Petersons earliest work before he made it big in Hollywood.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Chinese movie set in the ancient China. A love story and an action story. It has some major Asian stars in it like Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat. The imagery is just amazing. Visually it is a beautiful film (and the actors arent to shabby either).
Would you believe I didn't watch any films, foreign or otherwise! But if you have ever read my 'about me' page you will know how much I love them!
ReplyDeleteI had such a busy weekend, plus when I could I read .

I loved Crouching Tiger, it's definitely one of my favorite movies. It's just too frickin' cool for words!
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with these titles, but you make them sound worth watching. my Monday movie
ReplyDeleteOoh, Das Boot is a fabulous film and one that I forgot to add to my list. Thanks for the memory jolt!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the first two you mention (yet) but I have seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon--such a beautiful movie! I never tire of watching that one. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have been meaning to get to Crouching Tiger for eons now. And I forgot all about Das Boot - another one I have yet to watch. Not a big Chan fan - but maybe that's because I'm used to his English flicks.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any of these, although, like Bumbles, I've been meaning to see Crouching Tiger for eons. :) More for the Netflix queue!
ReplyDeleteDas Boot was okay. Pan's Labyrinth had subtitles and that was really good.
