The Alchemyst: Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott (Book 1)

Rating 4.5 out of 5

Sophie and Josh are twins. They are currently living in San Francisco with their Aunt while their parents are away on an archaeological dig. When they land jobs in the same street; Josh in a book shop and Sophie in a tea shop the twins think that life is good. Their world is turned upside down when they get caught up in an ancient battle between an ancient race called the Elders. They soon learn the lovely elderly couple who ran the book store Nic and Perri are in fact Nicholas and Perennelle Flammel. Now Josh and Sophie are on the run for their lives as the sinister John Dee pursues them looking for Nicholas and the infamous book.

I was loaned this book by a work colleague who highly recommended it. To be honest I did not know anything about this book and put off reading it for awhile. Then I picked it up and decided to give it a go. I don’t know why I was so reluctant to read it I just was which is strange.

Well straight away I was drawn in. What an exciting book. There was lots of action and adventure that made the story tick along. There were no real slow spots. The author was able to balance the need for explanations, character development and fast paced action.

The mythological aspect of this book is really fascinating. I believe all the characters bar Sophie and Josh are mythological beings from history. There were Celtic gods (The Morrigan), and Egyptian gods (Bast). Then there were the characters who were based on actual historical people who might be borderline mythical themselves such as the alchemists Nicholas Flammel, his wife Perenelle and Dr John Dee. From what I could see on the net the author captured all these characters backgrounds accurately. Scatty was my favorite character she knew how to kick ass (which she should being th founder of several martial arts) and was pretty cluey on the kids and what they were thinking.

Sophie and Josh were an interesting mix. Sophie being calmer and more level headed, and Josh being short tempered and suffering foot in mouth disease. They behave more like brother and sister not twins (which they also admit to in the book themselves). The kids are not orphaned which seems to be a popular way of getting parents out of the picture in Young Adult novels these days. However the parents are effectively out as they are away on an archaeological dig leaving the kids basically alone.

The author did a wonderful job bringing the world the book is set in alive. While part is set in the “human” world some is also set in the “magical” world. When he described the World Tree I felt like I was standing right at its base with the characters. Also the story is told from a few different point of views both male and female. The author did a great job with this as well with neither gender falling into a stereotype.

The main thing I really enjoyed which I have already mentioned was the mythological aspect and it is clear the author did his homework. Any kids reading this book will inadvertently get a bit of an education about deities and historical figures.

I would not be suprised if the rights for this book (and series there is supposed to be six books all up) have not already been purchsed to be turned into a movie. To be honest if this was done correctly it would make an awesome movie. Oh wait just did a quick search on the net and it is being turned into a movie and is in production currently!

My only problem with this book is it is clearly part of a series, you will have to read the books in order, and I would recomend having books 2 and 3 (I believe that is all the author has currently released) on hand to continue reading.

I highly recomend this book to anyone who loves YA.

Technical Difficulties - We has them!

I like this little guy so much I brought him back for more :) He is just so darn cute!

Ok in all seriousness it has been brought to my attention that a fellow blogger was having issues leaving comments on my blog. They keep getting an error message every time they try to post a comment.

Has anyone else been experiencing the same or similar issue?

Also has anyone else experienced a similar issue with their blog and could kindly give me pointers on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance to everyone!

Whats on Your Desk Wednesday? Meme

What's on your desk Wednesday? is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Sassy Brit of Alternative-Read.com.

Mine is a joint desk with my other half. To be honest it is mostly his desk, I have a laptop (not the one in the picture) that goes where ever I go. The books visible are mostly his.

There is the Bourne Ultimatum and numerous books by James Rollins. Only my current read tends to end up on this desk.

Next time I will have to take a picture of Mt TBR which resides on a bookshelf and the dining table (because that's what dining tables are for aren't they?).

Teaser Tuesday 14 July 09

Teaser Tuesdays hosted by Should be Reading and is a book meme that asks you to grab a random teaser quote from the book you are currently reading. Posting spoilers are a no no but anything else is fair game.

Two teasers again this week. I finished off The Summoning yesterday and I LOVED it. I didn't want everyone to to miss out on a quote from this fantastic book. I have also just started The Forest of Hands and Teeth so my teaser is from the first page. I went for a couple of sentances to give it a little more context.

"Then it touched me again. Long, dry, cold, fingerlike things trickled across the back of my neck. An indescribable smacking, cracking, rustling sound set my every hair on end"
The Summoning by Kelly Armstrong Pg 235

"My mother used to tell me about the ocean. She said there was a place where there was nothing but water as far as you could see and it was always moving, rushing toward you and then away. She once showed me a picture that she said was my great-great-great-grandmother standing in the ocean as a child."

The Forest of Hands & Teeth by Carrie Ryan Pg 1

ON MOVIES ~ Waterworld...

Feature Presentation...

MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week's movie topic is all about Water..

This weeks theme is all about movies filmed in and around the sea, lakes, rivers and streams

Waterworld - Has to be included being the biggest most expensive water movie that flopped spectacularly. This movie is just so bad you have to watch it.

Deep Blue Sea - Samuel L Jackson is all really need to know about this movie. It is silly, improbable and a plot line so full of holes it resembles swiss cheese. But strangely I liked this film! I avoided the obvious shark movie Jaws, I figured a lot of other people will pick that.

Pirates of the Carribean - If this doesnt make just about everyones list I will be REALLY surprised.

Finding Nemo - What isnt there to love about this movie. Not to mention you cant help but quote the damn thing for hours after!

Sphere - Creepy alien artifact at the bottom of the sea. Also Samuel L Jackson is in this (it is a coincidence that I have selected to Samuel L Jackson films, I promise! though he is a fantastic actor).

Piranha - A horror movie about flesh eating fish. I never really watched this movie. I saw one scene of a woman on a lie-low (is that how it is spelt?) thing getting eaten and I decided then and there this was not the movie for me.

Turn Coat by Jim Butcher (Dresden Series Book 11)

Rating 5 out 5

Note: If you have not read the other ten books there maybe small (tiny) spoilers in this post. I have done my best not to reveal any major plot developments or give anything for those who have read the series but not this book yet.

Harry is back. When Warden Morgan collapses bloodied and bruised begging Harry for assistance in proving his innocence, Harry accepts. Only thing is Morgan is accused of killing a White Council member and the evidence is pretty strong. Not only that but there is a super nasty creature in town that seems to be focused on Harry. Can Harry prove Morgans innocence in time before he is sentenced to death?

Wow another roller coaster of a book. While a lot of other series start getting a little stale by around book ten The Dresden series I feel is one of the few exceptions. This one is pretty much explosive from start to finish with only a few moments to catch your breath, and have a laugh before Harry is off destroying something new (to be fair he is usually only destroying something to save someone).
“Up until that moment, I’d been labouring under the misapprehension that the splitting pain in my skull would be the worst thing to happen to me today”
This book focuses more on the White Council and we learn a lot about the inner workings and the politics surrounding the Council. For me the White Council seems to operate somewhere between a Democracy and Monarchy from what I could see, so would that make it a Demoarchy? The White Council is not as simple as I first thought it was.

There was no Michael in this story which is disappointing. I really like Michael and thought he was the ying to Harry’s yang. Molly though seems to be developing nicely and will be an interesting character over the next books. As always Moose is there being a strong and silent presence, while occasionally being the smartest being in the room. I really enjoyed learning more about Morgan, that perhaps he is not completely the mean bastard he seems to be, or at the very least there is a reason why he is.

Finally the ending left you thinking "Oh my leaping gragoyles in red knickerbockers!". Okay maby not quite that phrase, but you get the picture. I am not kidding the ending was probably the best of the whole series.

I am not sure if Jim Butcher has every book planned out (a la JK Rowling) or wether he has a bigger picture that he ties his stories into. Either way if he can keep up the same enjoyment level I do not think I will ever get tired of this series.

Wednesday Funnies on a Thursday

Wednesday Funnies is a meme for anything you found funny during the week that you would like to share with your blogging buddies. I am happy for anyone who would like to participate to post a link to their own post here.

Happy Wednesday!

We were able to get out hands on a spare modem and now have limited access to the internet from home. Which is fine with me I'll take limited over none any day.

I was emailed this clip last week and I thought it was hilarious. So I went with the theme of pranking this week.

The Narrative Causality Is Experiencing Technical Difficulties

Just a quick note as I am logging in at work; I have been experiencing internet problems at home and have been unable to log in. It looks like this is going to continue at least for tonight as technical other half will be out having a good time at an awards ceremony, and we have established the problem is our modem not the internet its self.

Hopefully I will be up and running by tomorrow at latest, otherwise I fear withdrawl symptoms might just start setting in (so far these have been kept at bay with a book).

ON MOVIES ~ Say What?...

Feature Presentation...

MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week's movie topic is all about Subtitles..

Carleen @ Life, Liberty & Good Coffee recently suggested the topic of subtitles. So this weeks theme is what foreign films have you enjoyed? I personally do not have a problem with subtitles as I used to watch a lot of original Japanese Animation (dont get to see so much any more, not enough time). It is a real skill though to read quickly then watch the scene unfold. These days I dont watch a lot of subtitled movies, in fact I think the last one (new) I saw was Crouching Tiger.

Armour of God - Hong Kong/Chinese movie about an Indiana Jones style character. Action, Comedy and Awesome stunts. This is a Jacki Chan movie and personally I prefer his non English stuff. The action sequences are really why you watch his non English films. No insurance companies saying "dont do it" here. In fact while filming Armour of God Jacki almost died and had to have a hole drilled into his head (which is a permanent hole filled with a plastic plug). The scene is played at the end of the movie.

Das Boot - German movie about a U-Boat in WWII. This movie is about the life of a submariner. Even though it is told from the German perspective there is no right or wrong, its just survival and do your job. This was also one of Wolfgang Petersons earliest work before he made it big in Hollywood.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Chinese movie set in the ancient China. A love story and an action story. It has some major Asian stars in it like Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat. The imagery is just amazing. Visually it is a beautiful film (and the actors arent to shabby either).

Monday's At The Movies - Hotel for Dogs & Nancy Drew

We ended up having a family movie weekend watching dvds.

Hotel for Dogs
Starring: Emma Roberts, Lisa Kudrow, Don Cheadle, Jake T. Austin
Director: Thor Freudenthal
Genre: Comedy, Family
Year: 2009
Summary from Netflix
Placed in a foster home that doesn't allow pets, 16-year-old Andi (Emma Roberts) and her younger brother, Bruce (Jake T. Austin), turn an abandoned hotel into a home for their dog. Soon other strays arrive, and the hotel becomes a haven for every orphaned canine in town. But they have to do some quick thinking to keep the cops off their tails. Based on a novel by Lois Duncan.

This was delightful fun family movie. It opens with a little terrier type dog walking the streets in search of food. I mention this sequence as it is told from the point of view of the dog, which was a fun way to introduce the movie. Food is what eventually lands Friday into trouble with the law and he is taken to the pound. Andi and Bruce realise that looking after Friday is going to be much more difficult in an inner city apartment building then previously. They discover the abandoned hotel that is occupied with two other dogs and the siblings decide to look after the dogs there.

There is something here for young and old. The inventions that Bruce creates are fantastic and ingenous. Most provide a big chunk of the comedy as you watch the dogs interact with the inventions. The dogs naturally steal the show with Georgia in particular being our comdey favorite.

Emma Roberts has the potential to be a really interesting actress and I'll be interested to see which way her career goes.

Nancy Drew
Starring: Emma Roberts, Rachael Leigh Cook, Tate Donovan
Director: Andrew Fleming
Genre: Children & Family
Year: 2007
Summary from Netflix
Intrepid teen private eye Nancy Drew (Emma Roberts) investigates a Tinseltown murder in this mystery based on Carolyn Keene's popular book series. Nancy heads to Los Angeles with her father (Tate Donovan), where she uncovers new clues to the unsolved murder of a movie star. Can the small-town girl cut through the Hollywood hype to solve the case?

I have never read the Nancy Drew books so can not compare with the beloved book series. However for what I could see they seemed to keep the character Nancy close to the book. How can I say that? well when Nancy was going through her slueth kit she says she has a fountain pen. How many modern kids would even know what a fountain pen is let alone have one. Also Nancy has tinned home made cakes to give everyone, again even if a modern child thought to carry around food to give people I am sure it would be a pre-packed store bought something. The director tied this old world view and values Nancy has in that she just really likes old things.

Anyway on to the story Nancy and her father movie in the old abandonded house of a 70's movie star who had died mysteriously. Nancy though has vowed not to do any more sluething while they are in L.A. However soon Nancy is discovering clues (as her father exclaims "mysteries just find you") that point to solving the mysterious death of the actress.

This was cute fun movie that the whole family can enjoy. You will recognise a lot of the supporting adult cast faces (Bruce Willis is even in there) and they all turn in pretty good efforts acting wise. I was suprised by this film and really enjoyed it. There is a sequel slated that, if the same actors are in it, I will give a chance.

Wednesday Funnies 01 July 09

Wednesday Funnies is a meme for anything you found funny during the week that you would like to share with your blogging buddies. I am happy for anyone who would like to participate to post a link to their own post here.

Happy Wednesday!

It's Cracker night here (ok technically its Territory Day and we are supposed to be celebrating self governance) so in honor of this I am going with a fire cracker theme. I only found one video I thought was actually funny, the rest were actually quite disturbing at the levels of stupidity some people posses.

Now this video has nothing to do with firecrackers or even funnies, but when doing a search on youtube I stumbled on a jump rope group called Kings Firecrackers (I think) and they were so awesome I thought I would share this as well.
